The award was for the projects biomass boiler installation, supplying heat to the 22 new build homes and 5 small business incubator units on the Dairy Meadow development through a district heating system, saving an estimated 220 tonnes of carbon every year, providing the opportunity for families to live within a truly "green" community.
Development owner Mr David Nelson, accepted his award from Mr Richard Lee, Programme Director of Future Energy Yorkshire at the event held in Leeds on the 26th June 2008.
Competition for the award was highly contested with projects from all over the Yorkshire region being nominated, but the commitment and belief shown by the developer Mr David Nelson in his demonstration that biomass is a cost effective and suitable fuel for both residential and commercial properties won the judging panel over.
The development was nominated for the award by Mr Will Richardson of Yorkshire based wood fuel organisation Yorwoods.
The biomass boiler installation comprises of a Wood Energy Ltd supplied and installed Binder RRK/RRF 200-350, with a maximum capacity rating of 230 kW and works in conjunction with a 17,500 litre accumulator vessel, providing additional peak loading capacity, efficient boiler operation under low load conditions and storage of heat for instantaneous hot water demands. The boiler operates on wood chip sourced from Mr David Nelsons own estate.
