District Heating

  • Padanaram, 93kW district heating scheme

    Padanaram, 93kW district heating scheme

Wood Energy has provided a 93kW wood chip boiler for a district heating scheme in the Angus village of Padanaram. 20 housing association properties will be provided with hot water and heating, from a central plant. It will be fuelled by wood chips from Angus Biofuels, which has a processing centre in the village. The biomass heating system will help to keep tenants' fuel bills down, and reduce the environmental impact of the development.

    Earth-Heart Housing Cooperative, 93kW Wood-Chip and Wood-Pellet Boiler

A 93kW Binder wood chip and pellet boiler supplies heat and hot water for all of the houses via a pre-insulated heat main in a minidistrict heating system.

The Earth Heart Housing Co-operative was established in 1997 with an aim to create a sustainable community for eight households. The community is based at Atlow Moat which is a Grade II Listed former farm complex in a remote setting. The development was undertaken to high environmental standards which included the provision of heat and hot water from a single biomass boiler.

  • Blaise Nursery, 400kW wood-chip boiler

    Blaise Nursery, 400kW wood-chip boiler

Blaise Nursery is managed by Bristol City Council contract services and consists of c. 10,000m2 of glass houses and poly-tunnels providing bedding plants for Bristol Parks and Civil Amenities. The site is also a wood recycling centre where arboriculture arisings are brought from in and around the city.

The glass houses used to be heated with LPG direct heaters. It was decided to replace these heaters with a single biomass boiler system with heat distribution via a new district heating system. The biomass boiler was selected to deal with a wide range of low quality biomass fuel including high-moisture content and high leaf and bark content material available on site. A large pole barn was built on site as a wood-fuel depot, supplying not only Blaise but other local biomass installations.

The Blaise Nursery boiler was the winner of the 2006 South West of England Green Energy Awards in the category of "Best New Renewable Energy Scheme".

Hoathly Hill Community, 300kW wood-chip Binder boiler

A 300kW Binder system at Hoathly Hill Community near East Grinstead, East Sussex, heating system will heat 30 buildings on site using a wood-chip Binder boiler. It is currently the biggest District Heating system in the region. Previously heated via Calor Gas and electricity, the new system will reduce running costs as well as cut carbon emissions. The project has taken three years from concept to completion and received 6 grants. Marion Briggs who coordinates the project for the community told WEL that: "to be finally fossil fuel free for our heating needs is a dream turned into reality".
